Installation Tips

Please find below short basic information for your perfect woodfloor installation. Attention: Please read the manufacturer“s installation guides when you have finally chosen your floor and are starting to install it.

You can lay a woodfloor yourself!
Wood Floors Ltd. stocks and offers all the items you need to make light work of the project. We also have a range of tools, mouldings and underlays for a perfect finish.

Pre-planning
It is important to plan exactly what you need to do in advance. Your new wood floor can be laid onto your existing floor providing it is perfectly flat, firm, and of course, dry. We will be happy to advise you of suitability. Please give us a call if you need advice.

Natural wood expands and contracts with changing temperatures. You must therefore leave an expansion gap of at least 10-14mm between the flooring and the walls. This gap is later covered by a beading, for example a scotia which you also can find in our range. The wood will expand more widthways so it is better to lay the boards parallel to the longer side of an oblong room. The fantastic engineered products we offer are more stable then solid wood flooring and your are therefore free to lay the engineered floor towards the direction you prefer design wise. For example towards the source of daylight. For further technical details please browse through the manufacturers“ websites.

Additional points to remember
  • When measuring your room add 5 to 10% to cover for waste due to cutting and any damaged pieces etc.

  • The polythene wrapping should be left intact during storage and only opened when required.

  • Radiator pipes. Drill a hole in the board to accommodate the radiator pipe plus 10mm for expansion. Saw a wedge shaped piece between the hole and the side of the board. Once the board is in place the removed wedge is glued and returned back into place. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp cloth. Radiator pipe covers are then placed around the pipes.

  • Expansion allowance. At the sides the gap must be 2mm for every metre of board width (across the grain), minimum 15mm, and 1mm for every metre of board length minimum 10mm.

  • Most wood floors are not suitable for use in bathrooms or other wet areas.
